Trees at TreePhilly announcement
• Nov 6, 2018

On September 20, TD Bank announced an expanded partnership with TreePhilly, a program of Philadelphia Parks & Recreation alongside Fairmount Park Conservancy, that helps Philadelphia residents access resources to plant and care for trees on both public and private property throughout the city. To date, TreePhilly has exclusively focused on the ‘citizen canopy’ through its distribution of free private yard trees. Since 2012, TreePhilly has distributed 21,500 yard trees at 184 giveaway events across the city.

Through TD's expanded sponsorship in 2019-2021, TreePhilly will improve the environmental health of the city as a whole while also addressing environmental equity issues that directly impact the health of its residents. TreePhilly will work towards achieving these goals by expanding the program into two new areas; strategic planting of street trees, targeted to low-canopy communities, and large-scale tree plantings on public parkland. By focusing on all three components of the urban tree canopy, TreePhilly will make a tangible impact on the vibrancy, health and sustainability of the entire city.

"TD is honored to support significantly expanding the scope of TreePhilly in order to bring tree canopies to the neighborhoods in greatest need," said Michael Carbone, TD Bank Regional President Metro PA/NJ Market. "Tree benefits go far beyond beautification, they bring cooling shade and improve air quality. TD, through TreePhilly,TD Tree Days and other environmental initiatives is on track to plant one million trees by 2030."

The program expansion will enable TreePhilly to plant 3,000 street trees, 9,000 yard trees, 8,000 natural lands trees and 375 park trees. In addition, TreePhilly will also begin working with a broader network of partners, from Office of Sustainability to small neighborhood-based organizations, to energize and engage residents in efforts to address and mitigate the impacts of climate change in Philadelphia.

In support of its mission, TD launched The Ready Commitment, a global social responsibility platform and is targeting CDN $100 billion to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy. Since 2010, TD has planted over 300,000 native trees and shrubs in communities across the US, Canada and the UK and this fall, thousands of volunteers will join to further enhance over 100 green spaces for everyone to enjoy. TD has also pledged to plant 1 million trees by 2030. For more: www.td.com/vibrantplanet.
