Toronto Police Marine Unit and Toronto Fire Services dive-in to encourage Torontonians to help protect Canada's environment TORONTO, Sept. 12 /CNW/ - WHAT: What does a rickshaw, chair, skateboard, and luggage have in common? They were all found at the bottom of Lake Ontario last fall as part of the TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. To kick start this year's nationwide cleanup event and encourage Torontonians to participate at the Woodbine Beach Park cleanup on September 15th, the Toronto Police Marine Unit and Toronto Fire Services will dive into Lake Ontario once again in search of harmful debris and aquatic litter, and the results promise to be an eye opener. The TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup was created by the Vancouver Aquarium and has been operating for more than 12 years. Today, it is one of the largest conservation initiatives in the country. With a record number of registrations this year, participants will clean up more than 1,000 shorelines along rivers, streams, lakes, oceans and wetlands in every region of Canada from September 15 through 23, 2007. All data collected around items found on the shorelines is tallied and shared with the International community.
