Calgary Zoo and local students will clear debris and litter along the Bow River CALGARY, Sept. 16 /CNW/ - WHAT: To help kick off the 15th annual TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, the Calgary Zoo and local students from Guy Weadick Elementary School will be cleaning up the shoreline to recover debris and aquatic litter. Previous Calgary cleanups have recovered a traffic sign, fire hose, vacuum cleaner and bicycle. What will this year's cleanup uncover? WHEN: Wednesday, September 17, 2008 11:00 a.m. MDT - Recommended arrival time 11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. MDT - Calgary Zoo to clean shores and reveal recovered litter (*)11:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. MDT - Spokespeople available for interviews WHERE: Calgary Zoo 1300 Zoo Rd NE Calgary, Alberta Check in at the security office (south entrance of the zoo) and proceed to the Discovery Centre area WHO: Albert Carwana, Regional Manager, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation Angela Griffiths, Director, Conservation Programs, Vancouver Aquarium Noah O'Hara, Corporate Education Interpreter, Calgary Zoo WHY: Every year over one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles die through entanglement and ingestion of litter, and it's estimated that 80 per cent of this litter originates from land based sources. This year, over 60,000 Canadians will work together from September 20 to 28 to remove nearly 100 tonnes of litter from our shorelines and waterways during the 15th annual TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. Calgarians are encouraged to drop by the September 20th Kick-off Event at St. Patrick's Island at 10:00 a.m. to help clean the city's shoreline.
