-- TD Canada Trust Summer Spending Survey finds 85% of Manitoba and Saskatchewan residents feel more relaxed about their spending & saving in the summer months --
TORONTO, July 13, 2011 /CNW/ - Enjoying the gorgeous Canadian summer, Manitoba and Saskatchewan residents are the most likely in the country to admit they've let their spending habits slip in the warmer weather this season (85% versus 75% nationally).
According to the TD Canada Trust Summer Spending Survey, many Manitoba and Saskatchewan residents have let their bill payments (44%), saving (34%) and budgeting (32%) slip by the wayside as they enjoy the summer.
"Summer is a great time to relax and have fun with friends, but it doesn't mean you should take a vacation from your financial responsibilities," says Raymond Chun, Senior Vice President, TD Canada Trust. "If you take a little time to plan ahead and tweak your budget in preparation for your summer spending, you can make the most of the warmer weather without compromising your savings plan."
Manitoba and Saskatchewan residents were most likely in the country to admit the lure of the summer sun, abundance of summer activities and travel opportunities were the cause of their lax attitudes towards their personal finances. Three-quarters says that there are so many activities to enjoy in the summer they figure they'll make up the money in the colder months (75% versus 64% nationally) and that they tend to take more vacations so the costs add up (75% versus 60% nationally).
They were also most likely in the country to admit that the summer weather makes them feel happier and more willing to spend money (71% versus 66% nationally). One-in-two attribute their splurges to eating and drinking out more with friends (54%).
"Summer vacations can certainly take a toll on your wallet. If you think
you've been too carefree with your spending, there are simple things
you can do to get your finances under control without compromising on
summer fun so that you're in good financial shape by the end of the
season," says Chun.
Chun offers his advice on how Manitoba and Saskatchewan residents can
enjoy this summer without compromising their savings plan:
What else falls by the wayside in the summer?
Manitoba and Saskatchewan residents may let their financial habits slip in the summer, but they are among the least likely in the country to admit they are more lax in the summer in terms of keeping in touch with family (46% versus 56% nationally) and eating healthily (48% versus 53% nationally).
One-in-two also find they let themselves slip when it comes to exercise (51%) and keeping their home tidy (52%). One-in-ten say they are even more likely to call in sick to work.
