CALGARY, Feb. 17, 2012 /CNW/ - While some of us may think of it as just another long weekend, and an extra day to sleep in, a recent TD poll of Calgarians, shows 71% plan to spend Family Day, the provincial statutory holiday, with their families. Called Family Day in four provinces (Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Ontario), Louis Riel Day in Manitoba, and Islander Day in Prince Edward Island, Family Day was first observed in Alberta in 1990.

While nearly three-quarters of Calgarians will spend the day with family, the activities they plan to engage in vary widely. Most (48%) plan to spend the day resting and relaxing, followed by outdoor activities (33%) an activity in the home (22%) watching movies (17%) or something free or inexpensive (16%). Other planned activities include hosting or attending a family gathering or getting out of town.

For families looking for something FREE to do outdoors there are several events going on around town including TD Winterfest at Olympic Plaza. This family-friendly event features live music from local band, DarkHorse, with lead singer Heather Liscano, a regular performer at the Calgary Flames hockey games. There will also be ice skating, a snow garden for building snowmen and ice castles, and an ice café serving free hot cocoa and hot apple cider.

Hockey greats Jamie Macoun and Colin Patterson will be on-site signing autographs, skating and visiting with festival attendees. Ice sculptors will be creating works of art right before your eyes and families can get a complimentary family photo as a souvenir. There will also be a chance to win some great prizes!

About the poll
From February 7th to February 9th 2012, an online survey was conducted among a sample of 390 Calgarian's who are also Angus Reid Forum panel members. The margin of error for the study — which measures sampling variability — is +/- 4.96%, 19 times out of 20. The sample was balanced by age, gender and region according to the most recent census data. Discrepancies in or between totals are due to rounding.
