Seeing is not believing anymore. And Canadians know it.
According to recent research from the Canadian Journalism Foundation, 88% of those surveyed said they were concerned about AI-generated deception in the news—like too-good-to-be-true clickbait and blatantly fake news. Nearly 60% of survey respondents ages 18-34 said they see deceptive media content on the regular, including weekly, or even daily.
The survey revealed that trust of traditional Canadian media outlets (such as newspapers and broadcasters) remains strong. And those same outlets know that when it comes to AI, it's not black-and-white. AI can be a powerful tool for journalists and newsrooms, especially for small, local outlets and investigative teams pouring over reams of data.
In the latest episode of The Banking on AI Podcast, Natalie Turvey, President & Executive Director of the Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF), talks about Canadian journalism in the age of AI. TD proudly supports the CJF as a platinum sponsor.
Turvey and host Grant McDonald talk about the importance of an independent watchdog when it comes to AI innovation, and how this can lead to increased public trust and responsible AI use.
They also chat about how some journalists are embracing AI, why media literacy is an essential life skill, and some notable examples of how journalists are using AI for the public good.
