Ottawa Police Marine Unit divers to recover debris & litter at the base of Parliament Hill TORONTO, Aug. 31 /CNW/ - WHAT: To help kick off the 16th annual TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, members from the Ottawa Police Marine Unit and Canadian Naval Reserves will recover marine debris and shoreline litter at the base of Parliament Hill in the Ottawa River - where the Rideau Canal enters into the Ottawa River. Some of the more unusual items recovered in the past amongst the regular shoreline litter include a bike with no spokes and guard rails. With thousands of pounds of debris sitting at the bottom of the Ottawa River, what will divers recover this year? WHEN: Wednesday, September 2, 2009 9:30 a.m. EDT - Recommended arrival time 9:45 - 10:15 a.m. EDT - Divers from the Ottawa Police Marine Unit and Canadian Naval Reserves will enter the water and retrieve and reveal unusual, recovered litter (*)9:30 - 11:30 a.m. EDT - Spokespeople available for interviews WHERE: Base of Parliament Hill where the Rideau Canal meets the Ottawa River (near the Locks) WHO: Cathy Jowsey, Regional Manager, TD Friends of the Environment Foundation Angela Griffiths, Director, Conservation & Environmental Affairs, Vancouver Aquarium WHY: Every year over one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles die through entanglement and ingestion of litter, and it's estimated that 80 per cent of this litter originates from land based sources. This year as many as 75,000 Canadians will work together from September 19-27 to remove nearly 100 tonnes of litter from our shorelines and waterways during the 16th annual TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup.
