Five fitness zones in public parks are available at no cost to residents

Joining a gym can often be one of the best investments for your health. Unfortunately, the cost can be out of reach for many.

It's a problem that TD Bank and The Trust for Public Land aimed to resolve in Miami-Dade County, Florida by partnering to create five Fitness Zone Areas™ in public parks. In addition to installing exercise equipment, each project includes green infrastructure components like tree-plantings to enhance the parks' green canopy, rain gardens to mitigate flooding and solar-powered lighting.

Miami resident Michael Williams Jr., who recently received his amateur boxer license, regularly uses the facilities to get his "independent fitness." He originally wanted to join a gym, but the expense made it difficult, so these centers make it possible for him to continue his training.

"The fitness zones encourage residents to spend more time outdoors, and using the equipment provides additional health benefits," said Seth Dreyfuss, TD Charitable Foundation's Senior Regional Giving Manager for Metro Florida.

The Bank funded the project through the TD Ready Commitment, a corporate citizenship platform in which C$1 billion is targeted by 2030 towards community giving through four areas serving as the engines of change to create a more inclusive and sustainable tomorrow. The Miami Fitness Zones align with Vibrant Planet, which supports initiatives that accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy and enhance green spaces, particularly in underserved communities.

"The fitness zones bring to life the TD Ready Commitment for residents of the Miami-Dade community," according to Felipe Basulto, TD Bank's Retail Market President, South Florida.
