Video: Meet TD's Senior Wealth Lending Advisor Willie Tate, who is a role model for all
TD's Willie Tate, a Senior Wealth Lending Advisor, has made it a priority to make sure his four children, as people of color, know "they have the right to ask, to go for anything they want to do in life."
Willie has spent a lifetime ensuring that he offers that same message to young people in his community through his work as a mentor and volunteer in organizations that promote increased diverse participation in financial services.
"I am proud to represent my culture and my race," he said.
TD's celebration of Black History Month is a key part of our Diversity & Inclusion theme for 2020, "The Power of Our Stories," which highlights the efforts of our colleagues and customers and celebrates our partnerships.
While Willie understands some may be discouraged by the low number of high-level executives who are people of color throughout the financial services industry, he also sees a "big opportunity" to change the perceptions and influence younger people to consider the profession.
"I hope to provide a backdrop to future generations," Willie said.
Willie is based in TD's Washington D.C. Wealth Management office, where he is known as "Bow Tie Willie" for his fondness for the neck ware style. He has also made it a priority to serve as a mentor at his own workplace. Alecksander King, a Financial Services Associate, spoke about how he has benefitted from Willie's mentorship. Alecksander has been inspired by the way Willie connects with everyone.
"It's his biggest habit I want to mimic," Alecksander said. "Willie is real and honest, with a strong sense of empathy."
Willie takes pride in his mentee as well.
"I am so proud of you, the things that you are doing, and what you will do," Willie said. "I will always be there for you."
