Purpose and Promise is a series featuring stories that bring TD Bank's community impact to life. We'll spotlight programs that build a more inclusive and healthy future for all, as well as members of the TD family who are making a difference in the communities we serve.
While Federal employees were the focus of concern during the recent partial government shutdown, the impact took a toll on local communities. Many of those going without paychecks needed help to cover expenses, spurring a spike in demand for food and other essentials from community non-profits.
When TD Charitable Foundation employees learned that non-profit partners were struggling to keep up with this unanticipated demand for assistance, they acted quickly to help the bank's community partners replenish depleted food pantries. The Foundation made emergency one-time grants to non-profits most impacted by the shutdown and in communities already experiencing high levels of poverty.
Each check was hand-delivered, unannounced, as further demonstration of TD Bank's Unexpectedly Human approach to strengthening and enriching communities. Recipient organizations expressed surprise and gratitude for the support.
A total of five organizations received this one-time emergency assistance:
- $20,000 to the Capital Area Food Bank in Washington, DC
- $10,000 to the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger
- $10,000 to Project H.O.M.E. in Philadelphia
- $10,000 to Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens
- $10,000 to Feeding South Florida
“We’ve had a sense for a long time that many of our neighbors are one or two missed paychecks away from financial hardship, and now, unfortunately, we know it for sure,” said Christel Allen Hair, Sr. Director of Major Gifts at the Capital Food Bank in Washington, DC. “That’s why we’re all the more grateful for TD Charitable Foundation’s support, and the impact it will have for so many people in our region during this time of increased need.”
Paco Velez, Feeding South Florida's CEO said "We appreciate TD's volunteer service and a huge "thank you" for the financial donation as well." He adds, "We cannot continue to serve our families without financial and volunteer support. TD Bank made a huge difference today."
