TD Bank announced today that its retail banking stores at 7628 Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda, Md. and 255 Nassau Street in Princeton, N.J. have been certified by the International WELL Building Institute™ after meeting standards for architectural design elements, technologies and features that advance human health and well-being.

As the first retail banking location in the world that targeted WELL Building Standard Certification (WELL) after opening in 2016, the Bethesda store stands apart as the first retail bank location in the world to achieve both WELL and LEED certification. It also becomes the first WELL-certified project in Maryland. The Princeton store is the first WELL-certified project in New Jersey.

"TD Bank is committed to enhancing the health and well-being of our customers, our employees and the communities that we serve," said Jacquelynn Henke, Sustainability and Innovation Director, TD Bank. "We're proud of the WELL for Retail Certifications at Bethesda and Princeton, which are part of a pilot program. Both stores offer a unique experience that makes wellness a cornerstone of their design and operations."

The WELL Building Standard™ is the first protocol of its kind to focus on integrating specific design elements, technologies and conditions into the architecture and operation of a space with the goal of enhancing the health and well-being of occupants. WELL is grounded in evidence-based medical research that demonstrates the connection between buildings – where people spend more than 90 percent of their time – and occupants' health and wellness. WELL focuses on seven categories of building performance: air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind.

The WELL features at both TD Bank stores include:

• Access to daylight, glare control on the windows and lighting systems that support the body's natural circadian rhythm and psychological health and improve alertness throughout the day

• Enhanced filtration and cleaning protocols to improve indoor air quality and make it easier for customers and employees to concentrate

• Paints, finishes and cleaning products selected with low environmental impact on indoor air quality

• A water purification system that enhances drinking water that already meets EPA standards.

The Bethesda store also features a living green roof planted with a variety of sedum plants, which helps reduce the distribution of dust and dirt to enhance air quality in the area; and an exterior living wall of flowering Virginia Creeper ivy, which holds and slowly releases storm water from the roof. The interior of the Princeton store incorporates a sustainable, naturally preserved biophilia wall with shamrock ivy to connect people with nature. The wall also symbolizes the Princeton University tradition of planting the ivy. Both stores also offer a small health and wellness library for their customers and employees.

"Based on what we learned in this groundbreaking WELL pilot program, we hope to incorporate wellness features into other locations whenever we can in tandem with our larger focus on green building practices and sustainability," Henke said.

The Bethesda store was already LEED-certified by the United States Green Building Council, meaning that it met green building standards with design and operation features that are better for the environment and use less energy and natural resources. Opened in 2017, the Princeton store has applied for LEED certification and is currently under review.
